Inheritance practices and gender differences in poverty and well being in rural Ethiopia, 2011

This paper examines the role of men’s and women’s asset inheritance on the poverty and well-being of women and their families in rural Ethiopia. We use data from the 1997, 2004 and 2009 rounds of the Ethiopian Rural Household Survey to investigate the following issues:

  1. What is the long-term impact of gender differentials in inheritance on household consumption, poverty and food security?
  2. Are there significant differences in poverty and well-being between male- and female-headed households, as well as female spouses in male-headed households, taking into account individual and household characteristics, including individually inherited assets?

Gender inequities present a major barrier to increased agricultural production and food security in Ethiopia.  However, a lack of nationally representative sex-disaggregated data and analysis hinder the development and implementation of evidence-based policies.  This report aims to contribute to filling this gap by presenting a gender analysis of the Ethiopian Central Statistics Agency’s Agricultural Sample Survey (AgSS) data, collected between 2010 and 2013.

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world and is striving to provide for its chronically food insecure people. As the third most populous country in Africa, the people of Ethiopia are characterized by substantial ethnic and religious diversity, with over 85 ethnic groups and most major world religions represented, as well as animist belief systems (Webb, von Braun, and Yohannes 1992).

The Gender Implications of Joint Land Titling in Ethiopia

Land is a critical asset and a vital source of livelihood for the majority of Ethiopians.  Land, however, is becoming increasingly scarce for numerous reasons: rapid population growth, high population density in productive areas, degradation of agricultural lands, urbanization, and competing demands from different users, including investors.  In a time of growing land scarcity, women’s subordinate socio-economic status heightens the importance of their access to, control of, and ability to benefit from land.

The purpose of this study is to uncover the role of empowering women and achieving gender equality in the sustainable development of Ethiopia.  To achieve this purpose, the researcher employed qualitative methodology, with secondary sources as instruments of data collection.  Based on the data analysed, findings of the study show that the role of women across different dimensions of sustainable development is less reflected in the country.  The use of a women's labour force in the economic development of the country is minimal.

The Role of Land Certification in Reducing Gender Gaps in Productivity in rural Ethiopia, 2010

The importance of providing secure land rights to smallholder farmers in developing countries is now widely recognized.  In line with this, our paper analyzes the impact of land certification on boosting productivity of female-headed households in Ethiopia, which are believed to be systematically more tenure insecure than their male counterparts.  Based on parametric and semi-parametric analyses, the impact of certification on plot-level productivity is positive and significant. However, certification has different impacts on male and female productivity: male-headed households gain significantly and women gain only modestly.  Hence, the results indicate that, while certification is clearly beneficial to farm-level productivity, it does not necessarily lead to more gains for female-headed households.

The study on women and land in five countries of the Eastern Africa Sub-region commissioned by EASSI was prompted by the concern over the lack of ownership of land by the majority of women in the region.  While the majority of women in Sub-saharan Africa and particularly Eastern African region edge a living for their families on land, they largely do not own this land.  In some cases women are treated as labourers on the land who can be disposed of anytime the landlords choose to.

One of the biggest challenges facing Africa is the rapid spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  In 2004, an estimated 3.1 million people were newly infected while 2.3 million died of AIDS-related causes.  While the intensity, pace and impact of the epidemic is heterogeneous, two underlying patterns appear to be consistent.  Across Sub-Saharan Africa, women are affected disproportionately and in most countries, women are being infected with HIV at an earlier age than men.  Women make up 57 percent of adults living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Among people aged 15-24, females account for 76 percent of HIV infections in the region (UNAIDS, 2004).  Those at highest risk are also those who are most socially and economically disadvantaged.
