Land Governance is the foothold to economic development and poverty reduction in Africa today. Securing land tenure and property rights are fundamental to the realization of human rights, poverty reduction, food security, economic prosperity and sustainable development. Securing land and property rights are also critical in achieving the AU declaration on land issues and challenges in Africa.

The Inter-government Authority for Development (IGAD) is implementing a program on land governance with support from the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC). The main aim of the project is to facilitate the implementation of the AU Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in accordance with the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa, in order to facilitate access to land and security of lands rights for all land users in the IGAD region, especially vulnerable groups such as pastoralists, women and youth.
